Sight
It
This
is our latest product, our Sight It shooting vise. First, a little
history. At our range, we have an intricate, handmade vise we set
up before hunting season. We sight many rifles and make a considerable
amount of cash. The vise is mounted on a sturdy pipe cemented into
the ground and surrounded be a small shed for weather protection.
In the Fall, 75 to 100 rifles can be sighted daily, at $10.00 each.
Our first three versions of the vise utilized the same mounting arrangement. This was a mistake. Later versions utilized a flat bottom which could be either clamped or screwed to a shooting bench, but still used a parallelogram mechanism.
The
philosophy of the latest vise is totally different. As shown in the
pictures below, although it mounts directly on a bench, the movement is
now in a straight line, directly in line with the rifle's recoil.
The carriage ROLLS on permanently lubricated ball bearings for extremely
smooth travel. The recoil is absorbed by an automotive shock absorber
which will last for years. There are no swinging exposed parts, pieces
or springs to become entangled in while using the vise. The rear
clamp has been improved, now using simple tooling clamps which automatically
grasp the butt of the rifle without adjusment for each gun. The windage
and elevation mechanism is new too, much more robust, and easier to use.
Also switching from right hand to left hand operation is as simple as turning
the mechanism from one side to the other.
It does work the same way though. The butt of the rifle is placed
in the rear rest and retained using the clamps. The fore end rests
in the front rest. Chamber a live round. sight through the
scope, align the target with the windage and elevation screws, step back
alongside the vise and pull the trigger. The vise takes the recoil,
contains the rifle, and returns to its forward position. Spot the
hole, make appropriate scope adjustments, and fire again. Our operators
can usually zero in 3 to 5 shots.

Look at the pictures and you can see how the vise works. This is our sixth try (we don't want to talk about the Mark II version). The only lubrication required is an occasional drop of oil on the threads of the windage and elevation screws.
The
vise can be constructed by a local welding shop. There is NO machining
involved except the drilling of holes!
Due
to the weight and size involved, shipping a completed vise isn't as easy
as constructing one locally. We will construct and ship a vise, but
the easier way to go is to purchase plans and build it locally. The
plans will be sent by mail. They consist of three sheets, including
a complete material list including purchased parts and where to buy them.
Assembly is much easier than ever before. Alignment is not nearly
as critical as with previous models. .
